Having locks on their doors and windows is all that lots of businesses do as far as workplace security is concerned, but that is far from adequate. As well as having strong locks on your doors and windows, there are many other precautions that you should be taking, some physical and some training related. These are some of the workplace security precautions that you may want to consider…

- Point CCTV cameras at all entrances and exits.

- Install shutters that can be pulled down over windows and doors at the end of the working day.

- Provide a silent under-the-counter alarm system to signal a supervisor or security officer if a customer becomes threatening or violent.

- Position a security guard at the main building entrance.

- Install a metal detector immediately in front of the door where members of the public enter the premises.

- Issue photo ID cards to all employees.

- Have visitors carry temporary passes with them for the duration of their stay on the premises.

- Place a plastic window on service counters if large amounts of cash are being dealt with.

- Ensure that from their desk supervisor’s have a clear view of where their employees are working.

- Run training courses on workplace security so that employees know what is expected of them.

- Position furniture and partitions so that access to high risk areas (such as where money is kept) is not visible to members of the public.

Your type of business and location will determine how many of the above you need to implement, but all businesses would benefit from following at least some of those precautions. Some of them will incur no costs at all, so you should implement those at an absolute minimum.
